Doing the splits can be dangerous if the whole thing is not approached slowly.

Flexibility must be increased through exercise and stretching. Warm up first.

Make sure you are not sweating a lot during your muscles and flexibility training. If you are, then drink some Gatorade of better yet, Propel, as it has less calories.

Develop your muscle strength and flexibility slowly without injuring yourself.

Eventually you will be able to reach the full "splits" position.
