Why were the Israeli competitors of the Olympics of 1972 get murdered??
I believe this attitude changed in the late 60s. It was thought that taking water during exercise was actually bad for you which is probably why it was prohibited. The race officials actually thought they were protecting the runners! Football practices used to prohibit water breaks also! This was obviously unsound medical advice, and a certain machismo attitude developed around it as well which made it difficult to accept. I think in the 60s exercise science began to understand that water replenishment was actually beneficial (up to a point!), and I'd wager that it was sometime in the 60s when races started to offer water on course.
