Actually, "retirement" being when you start collecting Social Security (currently age 62), you don't have to keep working. However, the amount of SS you get is determined by how much you've earned over your lifetime.

ITS NOT TRUE FOR 100% OF PEOPLE.AS SOME OF THE PERSONALITIES LIKE SPORTSMEN,FILMSTARS,POLITICIAN... ,SHARE BROKERS etc WORK FOR VERY LITTLE TIME OF THE CAREER(5-6 YRS) & EARN ENOUGH TO TAKE CARE OF POST RETIREMENT YEARS.BUT OTHERS THERE IS NO OPTION THAN TO WORK AS THE RATIO IS FIXED IF U WORK U GET MONEY OR NO WORK NO MONEY.Can you tell me the country that had participated in the Sydney Olympics with out a national anthem?
