You need to run speed and stress intervals so your body gets used to running fast for what is a long sprint distance. Do 4x200 in 32 seconds walk the 200 for rest, 3x300 in 45 seconds walking back the the long way to the start for rest. What you need is to condition your energy system so your body will tolerate lactic acid. If you can do these intervals you can run faster times with less recovery. You can also do 450 meters, try to come through the 400 about 5 seconds slower than your race time and then run the last part as fast as you can, which hopefully will be at the same speed as the first part.The last four Winter Olympic Villages?

just run the 400 meter as often as you can or you could run with weights on your legs which will strengthen your leg muscles that are used for running. Pretty much anything that involves running will help. Since the 400 is partly endurance, I would run a few miles every or every other day if i were you.How many medals did Carl Lewis get in the Olympics?
please do not run with weights on as one person suggested.lestermo gave a good answer regarding the training aspect. You should even add days of 600s and 800s into your training.
