Debi Thomas was a figure skater and the first African American to win a medal at the Winter Olympics. She won the bronze medal at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary in the year that Katarina Witt won the gold.

At the 2002 Winter Olympics, an American bobsledder Vonetta Flowers, along with driver Jill Bakken, won the gold medal in the two-woman bobsled, becoming the first black person to win a gold medal in the Winter Olympics.

At the 2006 Winter Olympics, an American speed skater Shani Davis became the first black athlete to win a gold medal in an individual sport (1,000m) and the fourth black Winter Olympics medalist.
