In 1892, the International Skating Union (ISU) was founded. Six years later, the first ISU-sanctioned event was held, and organisers hoped it might soon become an official Olympic sport. Because competitions could be held indoors, figure skating was added to the Olympic programme for the 1908 London Summer Games and again in 1920 at Antwerp. Figure skating became an official Olympic Winter Games sport at the 1924 Winter Games in Chamonix.Figure skating is the oldest sport on the Olympic Winter program. Events for men, women, and pairs were contested until 1972. In 1976, ice dancing, long a popular event, was added to the programme as a fourth event. It had been a demonstration event in 1968 at Grenoble. It had also been demonstrated unofficially at every Winter Games from 1948.

Figure skating was part of the original 1924 Winter Olympics in Chamonix, France.However, skating actully debuted in the 1908 Summer Olympics in London, with Ulrich Salchow (who has a move named after him) and Madge Syers taking the golds.
