First of all the IOC didn't even have women's gymnastics as an official sport until the 1928 Amsterdam games. Note this was only a team event.Secondly it was the 1952 Olympic games when individual women gymnastics' medals where officially awarded. There's two women that both won gold medals for the USA at the Los Angeles Olympics 1984.
Mary Lou Retton- 1st American female gymnast to win a gold in the all-around competition 1984.
Julianne McNamara- 1st America female gymnast to win a gold in a individual event - uneven bars 1984. Note she tied the Chinese gymnast Ma Yanhong for 1st place.
