Winning a gold medal at the Olympics these days can in fact yield monetary reward. Often times, a sports governing body, or one's national governing body will award a monetary prize for gold medals and/or world records. This happens in swimming when FINA, or the USOC/USA-Swimming will reward an athlete for their performace. Then of course there are post-Olympic endorsements, appearance fees, etc.

No prize money is awarded. However the athletes may be offered many endorsement afterwards. They recieve the medal only.

Yes indeed there's a monetary reward for wining a gold medal it all depends on your national sports federation.

USOC awards $40,000 in bonus money for winning a gold medal. Of course winning a gold medal in a high profile sport brings in endorsements. For some athletes where talking like $1 million or more. Small parts in movies or TV shows may come as well, but of curse this doesn't last.

Winning a gold medal in 100m (Track&Field) is more lucrative then winning a gold medal in the hammer throw. More people will be knocking on your door for winning a gold medal in Figure Skating then the Luge (this's true in the USA).

Of course as time goes on people forget you unless your a famous figure skater or Mary Lou Retton. You can a get job as part of the motivational speaker circuit, get hired as a TV analyst every 4 years, or open up your own sports club.

Money for life no. I hope some of these athletes are smart and know how to invest their money and develop some marketable skills.
