What is this new Olympic event skeleton? I hear it involves a sled. I love sleds.?

I've loved sports involving sleds ever since I watched Cool Runnings. I just heard of a new one, which is called skeleton or skeleting. What is it? Where does it come from? Is it new or am I just clueless?

So you love sleds. Good news! Skeleting is one part sled, one part you! (That is, if you're interested in driving a one-person sled down an ice track at top speeds of 80 mph!) What makes the sport different from luge is that you're face first, stomach-side facing the ice. After you make that running start and jump on board your sled, I can imagine it would feel a lot like it's just you and your helmet facing a narrow track of hard, hard ice. You still interested?

It's the oldest known sledding sport, actually. Hailing from St. Moritz, Switzerland, when the Cresta run was built in 1884. In 1928 and 1948, the Olympics were held in St. Moritz, so they included this oddball Skeleton sport! ...but it wasn't actually permanently added (or I guess considered anything but crazy?) until 2002. Maybe that's because those X-Games couldn't possibly be worse? Best,

It's a form of sledding where you lie down on your stomach and face the ice.

The full name of the event is the skeleton bob and it's called that for one very simple reason. The SKELETEON is lying on the BOB!. As to newness, it was first shown in the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City in 2002 so this will be it's second time of showing.
