To respond to the last answerer, they did get rid of compulsories for elite level gymnasts.I dont think an official reason was ever announced, but I do believe there were several reasons:
1) To free up more training time to focus on optional routines. Usually half of the training period was focused on compulsories, and the other half on optional. This creates too many chances for injuries, as it reduces training time essentially in half.
2) It allows gymnasts who have obviously demonstrated their gymnastics ability to then showcase their strengths. Optionals for the most part allows gymnasts to bypass skills they cannot do. Compulsories does not allow this.
3) More interesting for spectators. Esp in the Olympics. Compulsories, like figures in skating, were boring to all but those of us who appreciate the intricacies of the sport.
I do not agree with the decision to get rid of compulsories, and it is definitely showing up in gymnasts nowadays. Gymnasts who can't do a decent handstand, decent leaps, etc
What new sports should be introduced to the human Olympic Games?
