BUCHAREST, Romania (Reuter) - The first couple of gymnastics, Romania's Nadia Comaneci and Bart Conner of the United States, married in a made-for-TV event Saturday.
Carefully choreographed by Conner's one-time Olympic trainer and the ruling political and business elite of Romania, the spectacular ceremony drew a crowd of several thousand.
Nadia arrived fashionably late, emerging from a garlanded black London Taxi, hauling a bridal train the length of a small yacht with the help of half a dozen tiny gymnasts.
Nadia, as she is universally known in Romania, was just 14 herself when she stunned the world at the Montreal Olympics in 1976 with the first Olympic ``perfect 10'' in gymnastics.
She took home three gold medals and became a hero in communist Romania. She defected in 1989 just a month before the overthrow of communism and now lives in Oklahoma with Bart, a double gold medallist at the 1984 Olympics.
