John Browning's 1911 semiautomatic .45. And there was the Colt PeaceMaker...The most common pistol of the time was the 1911 colt 45 acp (automatic colt pistol) - (though it's technically a Semi-automatic). This was this pistol chosen by the US government to replace the underpowered .38 cal revolver. It was widely used in world war one and was later updated before world war 2 and called the 1911 a-1. I believe there was over 400,000 made before 1920, and there were well over a million by world war 2. There were a lot of other pistols at the time, but this would've been the most highly produced pistol of the day. The 1911 was issued to the armed forces and would've been hard for the general public to get one because of the demand the government had for them, however, a significant number of soldiers brought their guns home with them from Germany as a souvenir. It is to this day the most popular 45acp if not the most popular pistol ever.
While any of the huge selection of Colt models were highly sought after, and probably widely considered "the best", Remington had many models in circulation, and Smith and Wesson was rapidly gaining ground. When talking about sales to the public however, (discounting military contracts), it would take all three of these manufacturers together to add up to the volume of guns Harrington and Richardson were producing. Millions apon millions of these inexpensive pistols were produced in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Because of the relatively poor economy of the era, the company virtually couldn't produce enough of the inexpensive firearms to keep up with public demand. The America Double-Action in .32 or .38 S&W and the Young America Double Action in .22 rimfire, .32, and .38 Smith & Wesson were two of the most popular with more than 2.3 million produced between1883 and 1940. The Model 2 was probably the second most popular issue, (.32, .32 Long, and .38 S&W), with 1.3 million made throughout the same era. While I'm sure every shooting enthusiast would have loved to have a 1911, cost was prohibitive. The sheer volume of the H&R pistols, is the reason so many people still have them today, and (along with poorer quality), the reason the average value of them is around $50.
Anyone know of a club or organization for H&R Shotgun owners?
There were many hundreds of choices from tiny vest pocket Derringers, to .45 cal double action boomers. Colt's and Smith & Wesson were the major American manufacturers but smaller, special order, and local made models existed. Merwin and Hulbert, Iver Johnson, Savage, Remington, and High Standard, Mauser, Luger, Walther, Webley & Scott, FN Browning among the many.Single, double action revolvers, semi-auto and full-auto pistols, pepperboxes, single-double and four shot Derringers of any calibers.Where to go to find out how much a gun is worth?
I would say a S&W topbreak or any of the licensed-built copies. Definitely not the 1911. That was a real investment back then and they were not really available (outside of the Model 1905 .45ACP) to the mass public until after WW1. Pocket revolvers were very popular back then.I can get to choose from a go kart and a dog i want both what should i choose?
Bound's hubby here:Commonly available semi-automatic pistols available to the generally public prior to 1920 would include the Colt 1911 in .38 ACP and .45 ACP, the Colt 1903 in .32 ACP and .380 ACP, Remington and Savage semi-autos in .32 and .380 ACP, the Baby Browning in .25 ACP, the P08 Luger and the Mauser C96 Broomhandle. There may be a few other less common pistols available, but I do not remember them.
I will not identify revolvers since you asked for pistols. However, revolvers were much more common and available than semi-auto pistols for this time period.
Good luck.
