Question:which would be the best line rating to go for rod wise and what lenth and how many sections should the rod be,
for someone wanting to start out mainly resevour fishing but maybe a little river fishing thrown in for good measure.

For a beginner, I would suggest a starter package from Wal-Mart or Sportsman's Warehouse. It includes all the gear you need to get started and can usually be picked up for about $50. If you go out and buy everything separately, you will pay $50 for the fly line alone. I think a five weight rod is a really good place to start. Two piece if you are driving to where you fish, a three piece if you are going to do much hiking with it.

Welcome to fly-fishing!! If you think that you will do some reservoir fishing then I would say at least a aftm7 if you want to be able to cast in any sort of breeze. For rivers generally I use a aftm5 but I'm talking about small rivers. On a larger river you might need a seven. Better to have a heavier rod than necessary at first if you only have one.
In all cases buy a two piece rod! Unless you spend hundreds of pounds a three piece is much inferior.Tight lines
