I usually fish for bass their are not as smelly as the northern pike, although those pike put up a good fight. We usually catch them on a 3/8 oz. spinner bait in a chart. or white/chart color. Red and white dare devils work also, pretty much any thing will work, we have caught them on 7" Black power worms 5" senko's ( they are a little pricey for pike though) my parents neighbor swears by 6 to 8 inch minnows. The spinner bait is probably the easiest way I belive to catch them, as long as they are close by they will inhale them, then it's fight on. Just cast out and reel in. You may want a steel leader I usually just use fire line in 14lb or 20lb and haven't lost one yet, although I would have liked to some times. depending on the season like early spring i would a large dead shiner and lay it on the bottom near a weed line.late spring to summer a medium/large shiner on a prescott#3 or a silver or gold lindy rig.
