Extractor spring on typical AR style bolt question.?
I've heard about people retrofitting the spring with an o ring to help prevent collapse, under what circumstances would this become necessary?Overheating? Steel casing ammo? Sandy/dirty environment? Or just something i should do because it's a common problem?(Is it a common problem?) Yes I cheated a little here, i asked a bunch of questions in one, sorry about that.(Is it really cheating? :-)

good luck nothing wrong with an upgrade, but the AR should already have a recoil buffer at the base of the spring and i know you can get better ones when the old ones wear out

IIRC (13 years Army) the extractor is the little gadget on the side of the bolt that grips the rim of the shell casing. The spring is located to the rear of the extractor, behind the hole where the pin goes, and is not exposed when assembled. Also, there is or was a piece of rubber or similar inside the spring, which might serve in part to keep debris out of it. I don't see where an o-ring would go. Perhaps I'm talking about the wrong part.I never had a failure to extract/eject that was traceable to a malfunction of the extractor.
