For coyote? .308 .247 .270 30.06?
i am lookin to puirchase a mossberg 100atr and these are the calibers it is avaluble in and i am on a very limited budget so price is alot for me

I'd pick a 22-250, 243 or 308 in that order.A good quality scope in a 3x9 or better yet if your shot go beyond 250 yards...something in the 4x12 (4.5X14) class would be a great choice.

I dont know if you hunt other game butMyself I have a 30.06 I shoot them with it does damage the hides but its a versatile rifle and I can hunt any animal in North America with it so if a buget is an issue and you want to hunt other game stick with the 30/06

For just coyotes, the .243 or .270 would be your best bet. The .270 would also work for deer hunting. The .308 is a bit large for coyote but is a great deer or elk rifle and the ammunition is plentiful. The ammunition for the .243 and .270 may become hard to find in the next few years.243's the best of the lot for a dedicated coyote rifle, but what else might you hunt? The 243's edging towards light, but adequate, for small deer. The 30-06 is enough for elk and moose, and of the alternatives, though it's way too much for dogs, you're more likely to find light varmint loads in it than in the 308 or 270. If you might hunt deer but nothing bigger AND you have a buddy or family member to load for you, the 270 might be best.

.247 and .270 would be a good size gun for them and you'd still be able to hunt ather larger animals with it. I use a 270 WSM for deer season and come accross a coyote from time to time and blast him too it's wrecks their hide but gets the job done. When i'm specifically hunting for coyote I use my AR-15 set up for varmit hunting using a .223 caliber gets the job done perfectly and a little more quietly than a bigger gun, and it doesn't have a kick to it. As for the last post saying .270 and .247 rounds will be hard to come by I very doubt it those are very popular caliber guns, as for my 270 WSM yeah don't get one because that round will be hard to come by it's different than the .270 and not very popular. Of the calibers you mention, I'd go with the .270.It's a good flat shooting round. Great for coyotes and fine for deer. Decent ammo availability. None of the mentioned calibers are obsolete. The 30-06 is the most popular.

Anything over a .243 is too much for coyote. For coyote you should be using .22-250, .223, .243. You can even use a .22LR. Anything beyond any of these calibers is overkill.A .247? May be you mean a .243? Anyway, any of the calibers you listed, including the .243, is more than adequate for coyote at any practical distance. If anything, they are a bit of an overkill but will serve you well during deer season. too.

I would say 243 would be best of these calibers, it would give you a good flat shooting varmint to deer rifle.All the others are a bit big and you would really watch where you shoot due to over penetration of the larger calibers.
The 243 is common place for both Coyotes hunting and deer hunting.
Every thing I hear about the Mossberg 100 ATR is it is a fine shooter.

go for the .308, it is the most versatile cartridge out there. you can hunt coyete or anything else with it. it has the power to do everything the 30.06 can do with less recoil and shoots damn near as flat as the .270. why do you think it is the choice for so many govt./ military sniper rifles? i think that says it all.I haver that gun in a 243, maybe you just hit 7 instead of three, because im pretty sur they dont make it in a 247. It is a great gun,never had a problem, and all i do with my 243 is coyote hunt. It doesnt really tear the hide up like all of the otehr calibers, but it does some damage. If you deer hunt w/ a rifle, i would go with the 270 because that is a really versitile round. If you do get the 243 i would suggest you look into reloading to get lighter bullets thatt travel fast so you do have a good setup for coyote hunting. I use an 80 grain bullet moving at around 3300, and tears the hel out of them. I would use like a 55 grain bulleta and slow it down a little so you dont rip it up like a big bullet will. If you dont save the hide, get the biggest and fastest bullet with ballistic tips, and make the coyotes a chunk of fur. My uncle has a 22-250 and all he does is hunt coyotes and he uses the heaviest bullet that can go in the gun and the bullet is really fast-3700 fps fast. with ballistic tips, and it just drops them dead where they are standing.

A .243 or a .270 are your best choices. The .308 and 30-06 is a too big for coyotes. In fact, the .270 is little big, but it will deffinaltey do the job, because thats the caliber I use to hunt them. You could get by with a 25-06 if you wanted to save a few bucks, which would also give you a longer range. The 243 is probably the best for coyotes out of your choices. Good luck.

.243 would be best. A .24 cal. bullet is plenty of lead for a song dog. I will never understand why some people think they need a larger caliber. I shoot .22 cal rifles. In my opinion, anything bigger on coyotes will just make you develop a flinch. Even a .270 is a bit much for me when i am laying on my belly with the butt of the stock on my collar bone. The less recoil you have, the quicker you will acquire a second target if you have a pair coming in.More Questions & Answers...
