Does anyone know about FEG Interarms handguns? Are they a good gun, accurate, duriable? Especially the R-9.?

Get a medium sized diameter of a fibrous rope (like clothes line rope, only much bigger in diameter) tie a knot in one end about 8-10" from the end. Fray the remaining 8-10". Toss that end into the water and when their teeth tangle in the fray, BRING EM HOME

How much do a couple of bullets cost?

Here's the old cajun way of catch'n em.

Gar have extremely tough mouths which makes it almost impossible to sink a hook in. This was the trick I was taught..

Take a twenty two rifle and fire down into the water next to them... the concussion of the bullet in the water will 'knock them out' for a short period.. then just reach in with a net and pull'm out.

If you don't have a rifle.

Make a slip noose in a small rope or crabbing string that's about the size of your fist. To the knot, attach fishing line with a hook so that it hangs down inside the loop in the center. Bait the hook with bacon.. if it's not fresh that's ok as they are scavangers and will be attracted to the smell. Lower the rope/hook set up into the water. YOu may need to attach a small weight to two to the string/rope to make it sit vertically in the water. When the gar smell the bacon he will try to get it and his snout will pass through the loop. When it does... put up on the string/rope tightening the noose around his nose. Be ready to fight for these guys can fight.

Cooking... gar is very tough and have lots of grissle. I've never cooked them before but a cajun buddy of mine did. He fileted them and then marinated them in a meat tendorizor and seasoning much like you would do with Fajita meat. Then he grilled the filets on an outside grill and it was almost like steak.

Good luck and I hope this helps!

PS: Be very careful with the 22 rifle method as bullets can bounce/skip off the water and kill someone. Try to keep the angle of the barrel as close to vericle as possible and make sure no one is on the other side of the gulley!

What month are the best for working in fishing in alaska?

i don't know if it's a "good bait" but a crocodile silver spoon with a short piece of BRAIDED nylon rope hanging off the treble is fun.. about 4-5 inches long, and comb out about the last 3 inches of braid so it's stringy like a mini-mop... it stays on top decently during the retrieve, and they seem to like it. their teeth get tangled in the rope so you don't usually get a hook-set (as you probably know they have long, thin, bony mouths and are hard to hook unless they swallow your bait entirely...)
tight lines!!

I own a P-38 gun that was given to me as a gift?

Cut shad works great. Gar are extremely hard to hook though, since their mouths are so tough. Put some treble hooks (2-3) about 4-5 inches above your bait. When they start thrashing around they will wrap theirselves in the hooks. Make sure you have some very stout line. It's also a good idea to have a metal leader, their teeth can cut regular line in two. Good luck!
