I would go with a 223 that what I use for varmints.Cheap to shoot and very accurate.
Just select the right bullets for each job.
If were talking as in antelope and deer then I would say minimum 243.
For this type of game I like the 25-06 and the 308.
I have a 308 on a 15 inch stainless steel and like the way it shoots.
My next pistol barrel will be the 25-06.
For coyotes on down the 223 is magic.

Medium sized game..?..deer?..you'll need the 308 or 7mm-08 but, on the small sized game like varmints ?, go with the 22-250.How often do you go shooting? What do you use?
Small game you mean crow squrrel and rabbit with a coyote or to thrown in?Hard to beat a 223 for the availiblity and price of ammo. If you are shooting under 200 yards may want to look at the 218 bee, 221 fireball or 22 hornet (all of these would have less nosie/blast than the 223 or bigger) I have a 223 Ackley improved in 14" and standard 223 in 10" and let me tell you there is a LOT of difference between them in BLAST and comfort, The 10" is not fun to shoot more the a dozen rounds at a time. While the 14" is about the same as from a rifle, even though it holds slightly more powder than the stadard 223.
The down side to the 218,221 and 22 hornet if you dont reload your own is availiblity, they are hard to find factory loaded.

I use a 454 casull 12" barrel for whitetail deer. All my shots have been under 50 yards and bottle neck cartriges and bullets under .35 are not allowed in my area, for deer. While the barrel is 454 I use 45 colts loaded with hand loads pushing a 250 grain hornady xtp at about 1400 fps. It has proving to be a good deer stopper with the longest deer track (if you wish to call it that) at 15 yards.
If I were to use a pistol cartridge for small game Id look at the 32 H&R mag or the 30 carbine. Right now I use a 17 mach 2 in my contender for squirrels and rabbit, I see that T/C has just started making rimfire barrels for the Encore so a 17 mach 2 or 17 HMR cant be far off. My 17 barrel is a delight to shoot and has grouped un 1/4 at 50 yards benched and at 75 yards only drops a inch for the 50 yard zero, this is in a 14" barrel.

Everyone always forgets the 7.62X39It's ballistics are similar to a 30-30 without the obligatory round nose bullets. It is incredibly cheap to shoot and it's mild recoil is a nice match with a pistol.
