What happens if you put the wrong size bullet in a gun?
Question:I inherited a shot gun. Don't know if it is a 12 gage or 16 gage. I have both size bullets. I don't live near a gun shop for help.
What happens if I put a 12 gage bullet in a 16 gage shot gun?
What about a 16 gage bullet in a 12 gage shot gun?

You will not be able to put the large 12 gage round into the small chamber of the 16 gage shotgun. You can drop the 16 gage shell into the 12 gage chamber but it would fit so loosely that I doubt you could get it to go off.
If you did manage to fire off the 16 gage in the 12 gage the shell would rupture because the shell's case is not being supported by the chamber. That could possibly lead to the pellets bouncing around in the chamber, damaging it.
That scenario is pretty unlikely.
I once was using my Rem. 1100 semi auto 12 gage at a bowling pin competition. I did not bring enough ammo and a friend gave me a few of his. I did not notice that one of the rounds was a three inch magnum round. My 1100 is only chambered for the 2 3/4 round. The round did chamber, recoil was, of course, much more pronounced and the gun jammed up tighter than a drum.
Using the wrong length of shot shell is more of a problem than using the wrong gage.
Don't do it! I have never done it before but it could blow up in your face.
If you don't know which one fits into the chamber. Sell the shotgun.

If you dont know the differance between bullets and shotgun shells...STEP AWAY FROM THE WEAPON PLEASE!!I have never owned or shot a 16 gauge, but I would guess a 12 gauge shell wouldnt fit in a 16 gauge champer. But if you put a 16 in a 12 it would probably get stuck, might even fire. But I would hate to be the one pulling the trigger.
Best thing to do, if you cant find on the gun what gauge it is, clean it up and put it away.

what happens is you would blow the barrel , and possibly yourself, up. don't try it,man. when your able ,go to a gun shop for help and advice. What number of little dandy powder router do i use for .38 and .357?
OK! first lesson is never but a 12ga shell in a 16ga barrel. the reason is this. the 12ga bullet is bigger therefor when you shoot it out of the 16ga barrel which is smaller the barrel will constrict the bullet which the could possibly split the barrel resulting in injury or death. How do i take out the trigger spring rivet on a smith and wesson 5906 9mm pistol?
They are called SHOTSHELLS, not bullets. The 12ga will not fit in a 16ga chamber, the converse will, but it should be noticibly loose.
Make sure the bore is clear on that gun before you go chambering rounds or firing it.
Look real close on the barrel and receiver.somewhere on the metal is the maker and the size
Any info on my 410? I've never seen another.?
in one word.. BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!...Are there any private campgrounds in Sequoia National Park?
Why not just read what on the barrel, I have never had a shot gun that was not stamped on the barrel near the chamber area that did not tell its chamber gauge. If by chance it has nothing stamped as to 12 g or 16 g then take it to a gunsmith or to an experienced hunter/shooter and he/she should be able to help you.
Do not shoot it if you are not sure.

A 12 gauge won't fit into a 16 and the 16 will be too loose. Just don't try shooting it until you've had it checked out (since you say its old). Normally the wrong ammo just won't fit or get stuck.H
Concerning firearms: What is the difference between a "Clip" and a "Magazine"?
The gun should have a stamp on the barrel just off the reciever that says what gauge the gun is chambered for and what length of shell. If for some reason the stamp has been worn off or was never there it should be easy enough to tell. Slide a round into the chamber and see how well it fits. A 16 gauge in a 12 gauge gun will wobble around in the chamber, and a 12 gauge will not fit in a 16 gauge gun. Or, you can use a micrometer to measure the diameter of the chamber and then compare it against the diameter of all the possible shells it could be.Where can I look up specific gun values on numerous handguns and rifles?
well if you tried to put a 12 gauge shotshell in a 16 gauge shotgun, it would not work right because the shells are different sizes, But if you put a larger bullet in a smaller caliber gun, it would blow the barrel up, and totally wreck it. But I dont know what would happen if you used a smaller bullet in a higher caliber rifle.try looking on the gun for writing that might say the gauge. or you can take a picture of it, email it to me and i can tell you
