I own both, I prefer the Remington aesthetics and like the location of the safety better.Has Mossberg beat Remington in Quality? no but Mossberg has achieved that high level of quality.
I own more Mossberg for two reasons.
1= It is a work horse that will handle even the worst of days.

Mossberg shotgun are used by the military and have gone through a rigerous tourture test and passed with flying colors. Oh my Gd NOOOO... I know alot of guys here talk about how great they are. I used to sell guns and of the shotguns Mossbergs were the most likely to be brought back. They would cut the chambers wrong.Pump action remingtons are the best pumps on the market. They are also some of the cheapest. They go the extra mile on function. For instance they use double rails on the action. They beat mossberg, browning, winchester maybe benelli (I just don't know)

Well, it depends on what you're after.Both have good build quality, but, out of the box, the Remington 870's pump doesn't rattle, unlike my Mossberg's.
Mossberg puts a lot of attention into their guns, even the little "pipsqueeks" like my .410. It patterns better than any of my multitudinous cousin's .410's, and has repeating capability for not much more. In .410, there are no extra pellets to be had, and Mossberg has made every pellet hit its mark in my pump.
Which isn't to say that Remington doesn't make a fine .410 either. I really don't know. I've used a 12 and a 20 gauge Remington 870, and a .410 Mossberg 500. The Remington's disassembly is much easier and more streamlined, but the Mossberg's isn't too horrible either.
The Remington costs a little more, and it is easier to clean.

It depends on the shooter ,But I own both and both are great guns.Remington has been around longer, and has a much better reputation. When my grandpa was alive, he was a gunsmith, and every gun he owned was a Remington.

Best is a matter of opinion. Both make quality shotguns but Remingtons will normally hold up better than Mossbergs. It has been seen time and time again at gun ranges. More people have problems with their Mossbergs malfunctioning than Remingtons. Remingtons were at one time used by almost all Law Enforement Agencies and the military. Remington is the most commonly seen shotgun in the field as well.
