What do you consider a trophy fish?
Question:I fish a lot and catch good numbers of fish, but not usually big ones. So I was wondering what you all think; how big (length and/or wt) do the following fish have to be before it's considered a wall-hanger:
Largemouth
Smallmouth
Pike
Walleye
Brown Trout
Rainbow/Steelhead
Brook Trout

I'm a saltwater fisherman myself. But a 8-10lb large mouth bass would be a good wall hanger. pike not a good hanger not walleye or brown trout a good steelhead is worth it. I lived in Seatle a few years and fish the Cracker bar and when the steel head were running and I saw a few monster atleast 25 -30lbs.Has anyone ever gone hang gliding?

the best trophys are the pictures of you with the fish.unless you land a record breaker. then i can see having it mounted. i fish alot also. mostly bass, and trout.
i prefer catching bass topwater.
i think the small trout look the best. the colors are amazing.
but if you get a goodsized trout with a hooked nose. that would make a great trophy.
i do about half and half, catch and release.

A trophy fish in my opinion the the 'catch of a lifetime'.From Snapper to bass to barramundis to marlins.
I guessed it must be either the fish that gives you the most thrill while catching or the fish you most longed for.
For me the one that I want so badly is a sting ray. I have yet to catch one surf casting. perhaps one day.
So it doesnt matter most what kind of trophy fish, but the story and the memory that comes with the fish that ended up as trophy.

well there is no doubt a really huge fish would be a trophy butt...consider catching a 125lb sail fish out 3 miles into the ocean and landing that sucker using only 15lb test. whoo weee what a catch.
2.5 hrs of finessing that sucker. taggged photoed and then released.

Crappie .. 2+lbs
Bluegill.... over 10inches

Rainbow, anything over 24" is pretty spectacular, with a 30" fish being a trophy in Alaska.Steelhead, anything over 20 pounds.
Browns, anything over 9-10 pounds, with a 20 pounder being epic.
Of course, I'd hope they wouldn't actually become trophy fish... these days you can take a photo and the measurements and have a wooden sculpture carved. Those big fish are too important to the gene pool to be taken out... especially the trout and steelhead, don't know about the other species.
