Depends on where you intend to camp and hike. In cooler climates your needs would be different than a hot climate. In general for the hiking you would need shoes that give good ankle support, extended hikes, a water bottle and energy snacks. For the camping you would need a tent, sleeping bags (I take an air mattress too) lanterns, ice chest, cooking utensils, first aid kit, a propane stove (ground fires are not permitted in some areas) in addition to your favorite beverage, lots of drinking water (carbonated and alcoholic beverages tend to dehydrate you which can be quite serious), whatever foods you like, trash bags (pack it in, pack it out). I have a large lug that I keep plates, cups, paper towels, knives&forks, propane bottles etc in. A shovel, small ax, extra oil for the vehicle, a couple cans of fix-a flat (2 flats & 1 spare in back country can ruin a trip) A GPS and topo maps. Can you leave a 12 oz. co2 tank in a Spyder Imagine gun when not in use?

Most backpacking foods, drink mixes, and snacks are packaged in aluminum foil. Aluminum foil doesn’t burn and isn’t degradable. If you pack it in, please pack it out!
Many grocery store food items backpack well, but they often use excess packaging. Eliminate and recycle as much of this extra material at home, before you load your pack.
