i would try a 230g speer gold dot. See if they function good and go from there. My p97 is loaded with winchester 230 fmj and i dont feel unarmed at all.What is the difference between .45 auto and .45 ACP ammunition?
The Federal 230 grain Hydra-shok is good. So is the Hornady "flying-ashtray" provided your .45 will feed these reliably. If your .45 has trouble feeding hollowpoint ammo consider the "Remington solution;" Remington hollowpoint ammo configured to feed everytime in pistols that normally will only feed ball ammo. Ask your ammo dealer about this.H

Bound's hubby here:As much as I agree with everyone here about hollowpoints in .45s, there is the realistic concern about whether the hollowpoint will reliably feed in your pistol, and the legal implications of carrying/using hollowpoints for self defense.
Having lived in a state where you do not have a legal right to self defense, and the state does not grant carry permits to the average citizens, and where it is illegal to carry hollowpoints ... my view is tempered.
When I retire in a gun friendly state, and I receive my carry permit, I WILL carry 230 grain Full Metal Jacket Service Loads. It has worked successfully for the military for almost 70 years, and the military is planning on returning to the round ... the best self-defense testimony one can ask for!
Shooting the 230 grain FMJs center of mass will stop any argument an aggressor wishes to mount.
The .45acp is a great round, the 1911 pistols have a hard time feeding jhp's tho, a great way around this is to use CorBon POW'R ball ammo, it has a small teflon ball in the hollow point to aid in feeding, and doesn't interfere with expansion upon impact.
