If you're using a trap, you can use cut bait (something oily) or fish entrails. If using a string, chicken necks are good, but I usually had a net to put under the crab in case it decided to let go. Part of the problem may be location. Try crabbing from a pier or a dock, usually baitfish will gravitate towards structure and will provide a possible meal. The pilings also provide a place to hide from potential predators. You may also try around rocky areas or if in a boat, over an oyster bed for the same reasons.

If you are using a piece of bait on a string, put your dipnet in the water before you pull the crab in. Get crab as close to the top of the water as you can, when crab gets above your net, simply raise the net to trap it. Never try to scoop the crab up from above the crab, always from under the crab.
