A .22LR really won't with one shot. The round is too light and chances are you are shooting at a moving target. If your hell bent on shooting coyote, try a .223 (5.56mm) or a 7.62X39mm Russian Short. You have to be pretty close then it's possible, not probable if you hit it in the right spot. If you want to kill a varmint of that size humanely, use a .22 caliber highpower they are a bit expensive but they are fun and it will give U a fast, clean kill.I think that 7.62's are too big but my uncle uses an SKS those are cheap rifles to varmint hunt with...

With proper bullet placement, a .22 will kill most any critter up to and including whitetail deer. Behind the ear works great, but is a very small target. Better is a simple heart/lung shot that will kill, just not as quickly. I have seen coyotes killed at 100 yards by a .22 and I have killed 2 deer with a Browning Buckmark .22 pistol(both at close range 10 yards or less).Will the .223 drop squirrels with one well placed shot?

a .22 can kill anything, given the right circumstance. A single .22 rimfire shot to the brain up close is pretty well always lethal. A coyote is a small, quick and agile animal, so it doesn't have any real heavy bone or muscle mass, so virtually anything will penetrate their bodies. A .22 centrfire is a much better choice, with more power and a better bullet, giving you a much longer range. Usually getting close enough to coyotes to hit them is the hard part. The quentessential perfect coyote gun is a good quality bolt action in .22/250 caliber, with a 3-9x40 scope. If you live somewhere where coyotes are shot at often (so they are smarter, and keep farther away), you might stretch things out by using a .243 or a .25/06, but anything else is too heavy.

I have successfully taken one coyote with a Mossberg carrying a X6 scope. I did it for both bounty and to see if it were practical. After the one shot kill, I looked at the animal for damage. The shot didn't make it through the body and the wound track was very small, exhibiting very little hydrostatic shock damage.I put the Mossberg back in the case and got out my Ruger Mini-14 in .223. Now that will take coyotes with much more efficiency. I pass on shots over about 150 yards unless I have my varmint rifle. A 7MM Remington Mag with 140 grain slugs will reach out and touch them. A word or two of caution..ALWAYS have an equalizer. Nothing wrong with having a 44mag or bigger with a 4-6" barrel taking up leather space on your side. Also..check on local laws regarding hunting, type of game and allowed guns. Some states frown on folks going after mule elk with peeshooters and such. The greater concern is a wounded animal becoming a problem.

a .22 is a old mans pocket gun. makes loud noise, scares your enemys . but is not good for accuracy. (Pistol that is!) long range. The MOB guys seem to like it...he heheck yes it will... if u hit it rite.
