How can I improve the shot performance, "reduce the shot pattern size of a Savage Mark 1 22 shot shell"?

Best way to attract Pennsylvania Black Bears?
You really can't reduce the shot pattern in a .22 without modifying the weapon. The best answer i can give you is simply to shorten your shooting range. If you want a tighter group with a .22 shotshell, shoot closer. Your only other option is to try a few different ammunition manufacturers to see which round groups best from your particular gun. I know i get excellent results from CCI .22mag shotshells in my Heritage Arms Rough Rider, while most other ammo gives a much wider spread. How many of you would be interested in a fishing section?
You probably can not..Pa gun laws ?, is permit to carry the same as permit to carry concealed?
Your options are very limited to make a great improvement in pattering, but here is what you can do. Either have a installed custom smooth bore barrel installed or have the rifling removed from the existing barrel. The rifling causes the shot to be deformed as it hits the lands and grooves in the barrel and also causes pellets to move wildly in the shot group. Both greatly negatively effect the shot pattern as a whole.
Cheaper alternatives could be the purchase of a .22 smooth bore gun designed for shot shells, a .410 ga or finding a inexpensive .22 and removing the rifling yourself with abrasive compounds.
Removing the rifling is as easy as cleaning the gun, but precautions have to be taken to make sure properly. If done wrong you can ruin other parts of the gun or increase the chamber dimensions making the gun unsafe to fire. Consult a gunsmith or gunsmith book if your not familiar with how to do this safely.
