Most important thing is to have sharp hooks!!
What should I pack for 5th grade camp and I need some tips i have never been camping!?
The first step is to buy good sharp hooks. A few great brands are Mustad and also Gamakotso. When I buy lures with treble hooks, I always sharpen the hooks so that when I drag the hook across my thumb nail, it feels "sticky". It is different for most baits that you use, so I'll try to cover the basics. When using any soft plastic baits, let the fish take the bait until you feel a slight tug. You must keep a tight line to feel the fish. When you feel the tug, set the hook. If you miss, so what, even the pros miss sometimes. After you know there's a bass on your line, re-set the hook to get a good set. For any crankbait type lures, you almost don't have to set the hook because of the way it is rigged, and how the bass hit the lure. For any top water lures, you have to let the bass take the bait and wait,(the hardest part)until you can feel the fish on the end of the line, or an easier method is to simply count to 2 or 3, then set the hook. If your using a topwater frog, most if not all, are hard to catch fish on. Usually you will only hook around 2 out of 10 fish that take the frog or rat baits. After many missed fish, you learn when the right time to set it is. I love fishing for bass very much. I had posted a question on here about catching fish in a heavily pressured lake. I had the same problem as you, not getting good hook sets. Not to brag, but yesterday, at that same lake, I caught a 5 pound largemouth. It was the best fish I have ever caught and I will never forget it. Try what I have posted, and I promise you'll get more fish. Tight lines! Its Hard to learn skateboarding?
The most important thing to remember when trying to get a good hook set is to wait an extra second. When you're fishing w/ anything other than spinners and cranks, hooksets are imperitive. W/ spinners and cranks, you'll just feel the line get heavy, and then you set the hook. With soft plastics, you must realize that the fish is not going to take the whole thing to start with. This is why a lot of people use attractants. It is the beginner's instinct to set the hook as soon as he or she feels the hit. DON'T do that. When you feel the initial strike, give it a few seconds and then set the hook. Most of the time, the fish will strike from the back. Since you're hook is usually 4-8 inches from the back, you have to wait until he bites, then sucks it all in. Imagine yourself eating a french fry that's about 6-8" long. You bite the end, then the middle, then the front. It's the same way w/ the fish, you have to wait til he get's to the front.
With topwater lures, the same thing happens. Most people set the hook when they see the strike, but unless you've got treble hooks everywhere (spooks, poppers, topwater cranks) you need to wait again. The fish will hit, take it under, and then suck the whole thing in its mouth. Once you see the strike, wait an extra second or two, and then WHAM!
Some other basic tips for a good hook set: Make sure that your hooks are sharp. I use Gamakatsu hooks because they're always sharp right out of the package. You can buy a hook sharpener for next to nothing. That's a good thing to keep in your tackle box in case you get hung up, but recover your hook. You can resharpen, and get right back at it.
Another tip most people don't do is to pre-stretch your line. A good way to do this is to take your line, tie it to a tree/telephone pole/front porch - basically anything - and then let out about 50-75 yards worth of line. Click the reel over so it stops letting out line and then keep walking backwards to stretch the line. That will decrease your line's memory as well as stretch it out so that when the time comes to set the hook, the hook will penetrate intstanly in stead of hanging in the mouth until the line stretches enough to give it penetrating power.
Good Luck.
bass fisherman is a nut you have to set the hook with all lures. The most important thing is not to have alot of stretch in your line. using the proper test line for each individual lure is the key even if means changing your line ten times or more.
