alot of that depends on your ability and the ability of your equipment. I shoot competitively so i practice alot. I will not take a shot at an animal more than 40 yards. There are to many variations of what can happen in the woods. I have been bow hunting for almost 25 years. I practice all year at targets that are 10, 20,30,40, and 50 yards away. 90 % of the deer i have shot have all been 15 yards or less. this year i took the farthest shot i have ever taken at a deer and that was 36 yards. And i got lucky, he went down right away but thats only because just as i was getting ready to shot a huge gust of wind blew my arrow sailed and instead of hitting him right behind the shoulder i him in the rear hip area hitting both arteries on both sides of his hip. Like i said i got lucky. there are to many things that can go wrong trying a shot like that. Its one thing to take the shot at a foam target 50 yards away and a nice buck. respect the game you are hunting by not taking shots that are out of your range. Practice practice practice. And not just a few arrows im talking hundreds of shots before you set out to take the life of an animal.Which brand is better Browning or Ruger?

First of all, your not gonna down a deer at any range. No matter the shot, in all likely hood the deer is gonna run some. Second of all, your more than likely only gonna get a single shot at a deer with a bow. Now i've had more before but very rare. As far as your question goes alot of it depends on your bow, equipment and how fast your bow is shooting (fps). With a normal compound bow I would say your range for a good accurate shot is 40 yds. I have never shot at a deer over 40 yds. The risk of injuring a deer is greatly increased past 40 with a bow and arrow. How much is a 75cent lure worth?
