How long does freeze dried hiking food last?
I have most of the major brands from 2 to 5 years or more old. The expriarions are not clear on the packageing. They were store in a dark room temp closet. Is ther a way you can tell if they are bad? I am planning a hiking trip and this is a ton of food to waste..THANKS

It's packaging and processing prevents anything from growing in it that may make you sick. Anything that far gone would be obvious - moldy, smelly, ... Nothing you'd want to eat anyway. Overtime tho, the taste, color, and texture is going to change. So you may not like it or get the nutrition you hope to get from it.
Really the only way you can tell is by the date code, or when it's too late - on the trail and hungry.

if it's in the original air free packaging, it will last indefinitely. Air must be present for food to rot. To keep air out, they either vacuum pack or nitrogen fill the bag it comes in. If the bag is still sealed, it could last you 50 years or longer. People have opened 75 year old canned food and found it as fresh as when it went in. The best way to know for sure is to open a bag and test it. If any air was present, you will know.Where can I buy a teepee online?
