Camping ideas?

my husband and I are taking our kids camping for the first time (they are 6 and 12). Any ideas on food and recreation to keep them entertained?

My wife found out early in our camping trips with our two boys that simple, easy to fix meals are the best. Hot Dogs, snacks, etc. Bacon, eggs, fried potatoe for breakfast, BBQ for the evening meal. A fun game they enjoyed was called BlongoBall or Lasso Golf. Keeps 'em busy for a while. Can't miss with fishing, if available. A plant and wildlife book along with hiking is good and educational. In many campgrounds, a bicycle can be used. Our boys are grown men now and still enjoy camping, and come out to our campsites once in a while to caht around the fire. Have fun and camp safely.

Pigeon decoying, Brits only please?

hiking is good - for you and the kids. Bring fishing poles, water toys (if there is a river you can float or fish!). We climbed lots of rocks, gathered firewood, went to the campfires held by the rangers...where are you going?

Bring marshmellows, chocolate bars and graham crackers for s'mores! (make sure you have long skewers for the marshmellows...!)

Spaghetti is easy (you can boil water with hot rocks near the campfire if you do not have a camp stove) and warm up canned sauce. Not too gourmet but camp food! You can bring hot dogs and cook them on the same skewers as the marshmellows...
Will you have an RV? A tent? What else will you have?

bring shovels, buckets, rakes etc. Kid sized of course. And inflatable toys for the lake.

Guntersville lake?

don't forget to make s'mores. They are a camping tradition. Ask the kids what they may like to do while camping. You may find they have some wonderful ideas.

Pros and cons of hunting...?

how about taking the time to teach them ways to be environmentally aware and conscious? i would look into "leave no trace" and other such ethical schools of thought on the outdoors.

make it a learning experience and they will remember it forever. make it a fun experience and they will remember it until they have fun again.
