Use a frozen whole pheasant. It will train the beagle on the smell plus it helps him to learn not to chew on the kill. First play fetch with the frozen pheasant. Once the dog is good at retrieving the pheasant and returning it to you tie, a rope around the neck of the pheasant put your dog in a spot where he can't see you and drag the pheasant and hide it. Beagles were bred to hunt, in packs, things like rabbits and squirrels, but I suppose you could use them in a similar fashion as a flushing bird dog.Obedience training is the most important. Will he obey even if he is hot on the trail of some critter? Got to be able to control him out in the field.
Then you will have to see if he has a nose and the desire to hunt - FOR YOU.
Got to be some folks in your area that have and regulary train bird dogs. Some won't want to have anything to do with you since a Beagle "ain't a bird dog", but many don't care is you have a mongrel, if the dog likes to hunt, has a good nose, and is bidable, they will help you.
The best way I have found to train anydog...is get them the basics .sit, stay, come,,,etc...then just run them with other dogs that are trained..works well for me...just remember..they need to have the basics first..that is the most important thing before actually hunting...they need to know you are boss and have the basic commands.
