What do I have to do to clean cosmoline off a German k98 mauser?

How to lock (to safety position) sig p226?

I've helped my husband clean cosmoline off several C & R Rifles.

First thing we do is take them apart. Next, we wrap the stock in paper towels and place in a black plastic bag. Set it in the sun, like on the pavement outside your house. We do yard work or cook something on the grill while we let it set. Let the sun "sweat" a lot of it out. Take the stock out of the bag, wrap in fresh paper towels and repeat this a few times within about three hours. Wipe the stock as clean as you can get it each time. DO not use paint thinner or oven cleaner or anything like that as I've heard/known of other people doing. This can ruin, splinter and soften the wood. It also cuts into the value of the firearm.

Then if you have a steam cleaner like one of those Scuzzie's. Use it on the stock for anything that remains and it can be used on the metal also.

Make sure to wear old clothes when doing any of this. And if you use the steam cleaner(not a pressure washer by the way), make sure to use it outside or if you use it in your shower, spread an old sheet first. Otherwise your wife/girlfriend or significant other might just have you spend the night in the doghouse!!

There are several good websites out there. Would recommend looking at surplusrifle.com. Lots of good info. on there about this process and a homemade cleaner called "Ed's Red" that you can make, as well as links to other good sites like parallaxbills.com.

Hope you don't mind advice from a female hunter/gun collector!

How do you correctly put new fishing line on a fishing reel?

I've heard many different methods of cleaning the cosmo off, but after asking a friend, who is a class III dealer who deals only in older model military surplus firearms, who told me to boil some water in a coffee kettle and let the steam melt the cosmo, I have done this only twice as of this post but must say it works, be sure to wear oven mitts so you don't burn you're self.

Boiling water

Which backpacking stove is better?

The boiling water is correct. You will need to soak the parts however to get them throughly clean. Take the internals out and put them into a disposable metal container (coffee can, disposable metal pan/tray used for baking turkeys, etc). I've used regular kitchen pots before, but it's a mess to clean up. Agitate the parts in the water for several minutes, remove, wipe clean, repeat process. Be sure to dry all parts completely before replacing in the gun. Once it's put back together, any remaining moisture will remain inside and aid in the rusting process. I like to wipe on a thin layer of WD-40 when I'm done. Don't overdo it with the WD however as it's a penetrating oil. If you get too much inside, it can penetrate loaded cartridges and wet the powder. Good luck!

How do i layer clothes to stay warm on my upcoming hiking trip in the georgia mountains?

Right now I'm in the middle of cleaning it off a Russian M44. Soaked the (small enough) metal parts in boiling water which seemed to work well and am now using low heat in the oven to draw it out of the stock. I still haven't decided how to best clean the barreled action though - probably will have to pour boiling water on it, wipe exterior & bore, repeat, then lightly oil.
