I want to walk up Ben Nevis, what equipment do i need?
Question:Just good boots and a packed lunch?
Anyone on here done it?
Is it tough? as i have no experience!

Ben Nevis is easy enough. I have taken many groups up the Mountain before on different routes. I suggest you stay to the main paths because I assume you dont know how to map read. If you can navigate you will notice that the summit is surrounded by drop offs that can be very hard to navigate round if the weather moves in.Two bits of advice then.
1. If the weather is clear, go for the summit. If visibility is restricted come back down.
2. Take your mobile phone, even if you dont have any signal you can still dial 999 because it is cross roaming. Ask for mountain rescue if you need help.
you need to build up stamina and walk lots and lots...
I suggest finding a local walking group in your area.. they should be able to give you advice...

Good boots. Waterproofs. Food and water. Warm layers that you can put on and take off. Oh, and a rucksack to put it all in.The weather can change very quickly on the mountains, so you need to be prepared.
It's just a long walk uphill ;-) Enjoy!
Additional: It seems that some of the people answering think that they are bloody action man, just because they've "climbed" Ben Nevis. Sure, there are routes up needing ropes and climbing gear, but do you think a mountain n00b is going to be doing that? Get real.

Dude, I climb all the time.
You don't just 'walk up' Ben Nevis. Although the tourist routes (paths) up the mountain are not that difficult (there are more than one way up) you still need to be fit and ready for any situation.
Check the weather. Wind can be a big problem, and dangerous.
Tell people when you go and when you expect to be back.
Go with someone else.
Take a mobile phone (check you can get a signal in the area).
You need sturdy boots with ankle protection.
Waterproof clothing, drink (plenty of), food, basic first aid kit.
And DONT FORGET YOUR CAMERA. ^^

If you're a complete novice then I would suggest contacting a qualified leader who can help you get to the top and then back down in safety. Alternatively, find an experienced friend to either lead you up the mountain or teach you how to look after yourself if you insist on going it alone. Maybe try an advert in the local paper or look in the back of the outdoors magazines.As most of the serious posts have said, good fitness, correct gear & food and experience are all essentials.
The bottom line must be: If it all went wrong, how would you explain yourself to the Mountain Rescue team when they found you?

If you need to ask you shouldn't be doing it. I suggest you start with something smaller and learn some mountain skills because the real thing you need is nouse - and dont go alone so ALTERNATIVELY the first thing you need is someone experienced to go with and set up up with what you need.What is the difference between rimfire and centerfire cartridges?
Mobile Phone, why are people obsessed with the help get me out of here atitude.Take some personal skills of fitness and navigation ability. You can practrice your navigation around the back in Glen Nevis, at Polldubh and the walk up to steall falls the day before, both a fantastic area - same map.
Mobiles should be a last, not first resort. Ignore the nutter talking about Sat Phones, clearly US.
A sturdy pair of trail shoes, or soft leather boots will be fine (something your feet are used to aleardy), Plenty of food (sandwiches not just chocolate) and water (2 litres), thin waterproofs, fleece jacket, a small torch just in case, Something for blisters, suncream if your lucky. Map and compass (from day before). Camera.
It is a good path and you just need to be happy locating the path off the top for the first 1km, it ok after that. If you see people walking off, dont presume they are going you way and follow!!
Start early 5 or 6am, so you can take your time and wont feel pressured.

hiYes all you need are really good boots and food but also a rucksack to put food in and also lots of warm layers as it can get very nippy up there. And i am only 16 and i have been WALKING up ben nevis since i was about 5 or 6 that is just a wee bit of an idea as to how easy it is hope you do it
