The same reason I don't bring a GPS, nor full 15 minute topo maps while hiking and instead I just rely on following the trail, home printed topo map section of the trail I'll be hiking, trail guide, and sometimes a compass. I have confidence that those things, my common sense, my 10 essentials, extra food, and other emergency equipment, will see me to safety, short of chance brutal animal attack or cataclysmic injury. I am out there to face nature, to take a risk in fact, to have an adventure, not simply for a safe walk in the park. well....who said that they dont!!! you see sometimes you dont need em , some times you do.in a normal and easy sorted climb you probabely wont need it.but in a high mountain climb you DO need them specialy if you r going solo.they are reliable if being kept in the conditions that they are supposed to be kept.you keep them inside your down jacket or suit and put it inside a plastic bag to stop moisture and it will be fine.almost all the brands come with GPS service inside it and even the better is tracing abilities. as i said before you dont need to gear up too much for a small trip but for high mountain things can turn into a nasty mass just in minutes.and even if there is no emergencies it`s always a great pleasure to talk to family or friends while you are in camps and away from them for something like a month or more.(sometimes the closest urban place is like 5-6 days away )also you can get weather forecasts from base camp or sattelite for next days when you are in high camps so you can decide better to make a summit attempt or descend.(difference could be the matter of life and death pretty easy)
