How can I learn to hunt pheasant with my dog?
I am a 34-year-old female who recently aquired a german shorthaired pointer (bird dog) and would love to take her out in the field. I love game birds and would also love to learn to hunt myself! I live in the Bay Area, CA and was wondering if there was a place we could go and learn...

There are a myriad of books that will teach you how to train your dog. If your dog is purebread, it will aready have the instincts and nose to hunt. What you will have to work on is teaching it to stay close and listen to you. Those dogs will get on a scent, run forever and not come back. I live in North Dakota and we have a bunch of cases of people coming here to hunt and losing their dogs because they took off and got lost. I don't know what the hunting scene is in California, but with a properly trained dog you will be able to find birds and learn to hunt if land is available. Check around for game farms and see if you can start there and work your way up to hunting on your own.I am soooo against hunting. But for your sake as well as your dog...
First of all you need to do some clay shooting and get some skills in that area. Has your dog been used for hunting? You need to be really careful with the dog. It might not be trained, or it may have been a while since she hunted. I have a friend who got a GSP for hunting. Got her from a farm where she was trained and hunted well. Well, he got her home and she became gun shy. And it's reallllly hard to find a scared dog lost in the woods.

Nothing is worse than hunting pheasants with a bad dog who cannot stop from flushing birds...especially when you pay for the hunt per bird.
