Whats the best line settup for trout fishing using a bait and hook?

As far as the "best" rig, conditions vary so much there is no best rig. You might use a small sliding sinker, held a couple feet from the hook with a small swivel (if you're using a leader) or a small split shot. Or if the fish are nearer the surface, use a bobber, with a small split shot to get the hook down.
Hook size and type depends on the bait you're using -- a "bait holder" hook (long shank with barbs on the shank) is good for worms, with salmon eggs use a little round salmon egg hook, with doughy bait (power bait) sometimes you use a tiny treble hook. Basically you want the bait to hide the hook, so it looks (to you) like the bait is just hanging on the line (hopefully the fish won't see the line at all).
I use 4 pound test line when I trout fish with live bait. A small bait-holder hook in a size 8 or 10 with a worm or minnow works great. Use a small split-shot sinker to keep the bait down and you should do fine. Use just enough weight to keep the bait floating near the bottom. If you are fishing a river or stream make sure the bait moves along the bottom. Good luck fishing.

Use either 2 or 4lb test line and small hooks around a size 10. Use this with either a slip bobber setup or simply let it drift close to the bottom with the current.Backpacking-backcountry pants?

I fish for trout off the side of a stream just about every day. I either use a bobber about 6 inches above a small sized hook with two salmon eggs on it or a panther martin. a panther martin is a small spinner that promises to catch big fish. If that doesn't work try useing a fly with salmon eggs on it. just let it float down stream.More Questions & Answers...
