You can do it without ballast IF you have a wide enough beam. The key is to not have a narrow pad of barrels and all your weight two feet (for example) or more above the water's surface. You can easily flip it in that case. Maybe you can screw the 2x6's across the ends of two barrels, putting the 2x6 about at the center of the circular portion of the barrel (it should look like Fred Flintstone's car if you remember that). The further apart you can get those barrels the better. If you can string two of those together (barrel end facing barrel end) you should get some pretty good bouyancy and some deckspace to stand on. That'd be how I'd try it first. It sounds pretty fun (but fun from a boatbuilding perspective - you can annoy the fish with better tackle a lot more effectively).

Good luck!

Edit: just some quick math...water weighs 8 pounds a gallon, a 55 gallon drum can keep 440 pounds stuff afloat (barrel weight is negligible)...problem is you can't balance anything on top of a barrel Four barrels should be able to support 1600 pounds...plenty of flotation *as long as* you fight the temptation to simply lash them all together. You lashthem together and you (by yourself) probably only submerge the barrels a couple inches, then there you are, 150 pounds of ballast suspended 3 feet out of the water on a craft with a 2 foot beam. Take 150 pounds of flesh, 150 pounds of decking wood nail (screw) it just above the centerline of the barrels and the wood should stay out of the water (because you've only got to support 300 lb of stuff...that's less than 40% of your flotation capacity so the barrels won't be but about 40% underwater.

Make sure that you use ballast to prevent raft from flipping over, it is a delicate balance between bouancy and stability.

Does anybody have any ideas for a 8th graduation pool party? For games?

Our village hosts an annual raft race across the lake, its quite funny to watch and easy to learn from others mistakes. If i were you i would definitely build something with out riggers to ensure stability and use rope for lashing the beams to the barrels. Flexibility is the key to success and using rope lashing rather than screw fixing gives the flexibility required. build a central platform with barrels to the outside then additional outriggers for stability.
Alternatively you could cut the side off a barrel to sit in with a complete one front and rear lashed together with beams then cross lash beams to two barrels each side as out riggers, in turn lashed with beams to each other, this worked really well for last years winner as he had a low centre of gravity and was able to paddle in the gap between the outriggers, its like a canoe with stabilisers . In all you would need 7 barrels, quite a few lenghts of wood depending on how much rigidity you want and lots of rope..Good luck and happy fishing..if you want to offer trips I really enjoy a good boat trip!!! Me and a buddy is having a conversation about guns and are arguing on this question.?

you need to bolt them together from inside then fill the edge with silicone to stop the water and don't use it in the sea and don't forget the life jacket other than that i have no further advice

Im trying to find a rig that keeps my bait off the bottom and in the strike zone ! what can i use ?

We sponsor the annual Canon City, Colorado Build Your Own Boat Race each year on the Arkansas River. Always entertaining! I've seen allot of crazy rafts and many different ways of constructing them. I'd suggest using cam straps to lash them together, and maybe some Styrofoam as flotation. NRS makes a good cam strap. National River Supplies. Good Luck!
P.S. old kegs seem to work well too!
