Can someone provide information about hiking half dome at night?
I have heard from many people that a great way to hike half dome is to do it at night. I have hiked it in one day during the day, but have heard that leaving late at night and getting to the top while still dark to see stars and to stay for the sunrise is awesome. Then I guess you head back down after you have seen the sunrise. Has anyone done this and if so...is there anything I should know about this?

I don't really know how you could lose the trail as it so well traveled. I have hiked Half Dome at night as well as camped out on top for the night. The cable section would be the most dangerous but if you have done it before then i guess you know what to expect. I would check all weather reports beforehand. Half Dome is a giant lightning rod in a storm and people get killed every year from lightning strikes. Camping overnight on top is also illegal because of a rare salamander that makes its home up there so be ready to explain yourself should you be questioned by a ranger (I was stopped by a ranger one night and I told them I was going to camp at the base of the cables and they let me go). The sunset is beautiful and the sunrise is better. Have you considered camping out on Clouds Rest which is near half dome and 1,000 feet higher as well as being legal to camp out on?Where can I find 3M's new Greptile glove and grip system in Dallas/Fort Worth?
I found this quote from a website on wilderness climbing and visits.Let me say, I agree with the author. This is not a climb for someone who has not done it before, and who does not have a guide. It is dangerous and requires someone with a bit of experience with you. Other than that, ask around for anyone who has done it.
good luck.
Hiking to the top of Half Dome through Little Yosemite Valley and up the cables on the back side of the dome is a long day hike. This route is busy with lots of hikers on the trail each and every day, especially on weekends. On the cables I have seen men, women and children freak out, this can be a scary place.
Hiking the trail at night and reaching the cables at sunrise is a great way to enjoy the climb. I would not make a night hike attempt on my first try, you really need to know the trail to avoid getting lost in the dark of night. Seeing sunrise on top of Half Dome is an exciting moment to experience in Yosemite National Park.
The cables are open between mid May to mid October. I like the last weekend of September for my climbs.
How do you feel about those large outdoor trampolines and kids?
Sounds a bit dangerous to me...I would hike it a few more times during the day to get the terrain down...and just be prepared...'cause you're on your own 'till morning...More Questions & Answers...
