I am describing rugby union here.It depends on what position you play. Players are usually placed in positions that utilise their natural ability. In other words, each position is played by a person with the best physical abilities for that position.
To make it easy for you, and not explain every position, I will explain only the functions of the forwards, and of the backs.
There are 8 positions in the forwards, and they all differ in their responsibilities. If you are a forward, you will have to:
- pack into scrums.
- run around the field and join any ruck and maul you see that is in progress.
- join line outs and either throw the ball in, jump for the ball, or lift someone to they can get the ball.
- make tackles. This could be covering tackles for backs who cannot tackle.
There are 7 positions in the backs. Once again, these a specialised positions. If you are a back you will have to:
- catch the ball when passed or kicked.
- pass the ball.
- kick the ball. A general idea is good enough, you do not have to kick it 50 metres.
- tackle opposing players.
- run fast.
- pick up the ball on the ground.
That is the basics. Now to how to play.
You keep you eyes on the ball. This means you watch the ball at ALL times.
If your team is kicking off, you usually want to either get the ball from the kick off, or stop the opposing team from gaining ground if they get the ball.
To stop the opposing team, you usually have to tackle the player with the ball.
A ruck or maul may form, and your teams forwards will have to get into the ruck or maul and try to win the ball for their team.
If no forwards are around, a back may have to go into the ruck and maul instead.
If a team is close to their own [try] line with the ball, they usually kick it out to get the ball further away from their own [try] line.
A team may want to get ther ball closer to the oppositions [try] line, and will kick the ball out closer to that line.
If the ball is kicked within the 22 metre line, the line out is where the ball crossed the side line. This is true also when the ball goes out on the full.
If the ball is kicked outside the 22 metre line, the line out is where the ball crossed the line only if it did not go out on the full. If the ball [kick] went out on the full, the lineout is from where the ball was kicked.
You and your team want to get the ball to cross the opponents try line and to score a try when there. A try is scored when you have 'downward pressure' on the ball on or after it crosses the try line. Beware though, there is a line after the try line that is known as the 'dead ball' line. If the ball goes on or over this, you cannot score a try any longer. After you score the try, you get a chance to kick the ball over the crossbar and between the posts of the 'goal posts'. You must take the kick in a straight line from the position the try was scored.
There are other ways to score, for instance a drop goal, a penalty goal.

rugby is kinda like football. the ball is the same (though its kinda spiral in shape), the movement is almost likely the same the only difference is that you wont get a point if you kick the ball and landed on the home base and you cant pass the ball backwards.More Questions & Answers...
