Why did spread rugby union so much as a sport accross California?

Question:I read that there is a lot of rugby in California. WHy is it?

the Univ. of California at Berkeley has won 22 of the last 30 Univ. level championships. that has led to a surge in popularity, especially in northern California. southern california recently hosted the amateur world championships with 400 teams or so.
