Hey RogerI will certainly agree with you that American football players are not pansies, however I think that as an overall game, rugby is unquestionably tougher.
Those huge tackles where players "flip over twice" as you mention, happen very rarely - most of the time, the player with the ball will run out of bounds resulting in absolutely no contact.
With rugby, the tackles are happening almost every few seconds and as a result, rugby is much more intense.
Also, the one thing which disappointed me when I first watched American Football, was the pace of the game. It is extremely slow and I found it a bit boring to be honest. A play would last only for a few seconds before the whole set-up would have to be repeated so the actual amount of action that you see is quite small. Plus substituting the whole team for defense/offence is pretty daft and the fact that the game stops for advert breaks is highly irritating: It seems as though you don't have to be fit to play American Football.
I think the reason why a lot of Americans don't like rugby is the fact that from a young age, they have been brought up on American Football and rugby, at first viewing, may seem quite confusing. However I would really recommend trying to catch a few rugby games if you can (especially between the big five teams of the world namely New Zealand, South Africa, Australia, France and England).
After sitting through a few games, you'll notice that it is a much more intense with better action than American Football - although as I said before, American Football is not a game for pansies, it's just that rugby is probably tougher!
