Running!? and a 11 y/o !!??


Question:My sister is 11 y/o. She wants to start running in the morning. She said that she will wake up 30 min. earlier every morning. She is 4'7 and weighs in at 63 lbs. She want to run in the kids 1.1 mile marathon.

How many miles should she start off at? How many minutes should she run for?
How many days a week should she run?

If possible a routien would be nice. She wakes up around 7:30-8:00 depending on the day.

Running is actually one of the most healthy things your sister can do. She just shouldn't over do it and can safely train 3 - 4 times per week. She should start off running 5 minutes at an easy pace and increase 1 minute each workout working her way up to 30 minutes or about 3 miles max.

she should start off slowly, and listen to her body. a good start would be to run/jog for just 15 minutes 3 days a week, and see how that feels. after a couple weeks, increase it to 20 minutes, then 30, and go for 4 or 5 days a week.

Wow, that takes some kind of determination, especially at that age. I salute your sister for setting such goals. Anyways, I'd say to take it slowly. Since she's still in her growing years, creating a strenuous regime could be detrimental to her health later on. I don't know have any exact numbers but I'd say running a mile each day. I remember in middle school we had weekly one-mile tests so running a mile a day should be okay.

My hamstrings are killing me, what should i do?

I Personally feel that is young to start running on a regular basis, does she play any other sports? if she does then i would just explain to her that the running she is doing for the sport at practice and games is more than enough for her to be able to complete the 1.1 marathon and do it pretty well, if she does not then i would not let her run for longer than ten minutes in the morning. she is young and too much running could hurt her joints and may even slow her growth.

I would suggest three-four times a week anywhere from 6-10 minutes. It is a short enough time that she will get up and do the work. running is great sport to get involved in, Healthy and Enjoyable, make it fun not a chore this way she will stay involved for a long time to come.

Does being supple and flexible make you a faster or slower runner.?

she should probably start off at a slow pace but long distance. if u r up 2 running with her go for it or biking is nice to. if she is just starting to run 3 miles should be the max. if she feels she can do more let her but dont let her quit then.

It is important that she enjoy running. Try to make things fun for her. Do not push her, but let her set her own pace. If her objective is to run 1.1 miles then she needs to aim for that goal. Let her run and walk for the distance. 3 to 4 times a week would be okay in the beginning.

thats great that your little sister is getting into running its the best sport i started at her age to i am 14 now.
to start off with running in the morning you don't wanna over do it so to start off with since shes only like 11 start with a week of running in the morning for only like 20 mins. then increase the mins of running each week. so start with like a mile and shes needs to pace herself. hmm... well you just don't wanna over do it. depends what kinda shape she is in but for the first week run like every other day.

What's the general rule on running in the bike lane? against traffic or with traffic?

depending on how much heart she has 2 run. 2 miles in 20-25 minutes running that for two weeks the body while get use to it and she'll no this by the amount of recovery time. Tip when running get a good start run about 5 five then black out ( focus on nothing dont like just breath only thought your nose to keep the body relax,relax eyes so the whole body goes into a Cruise mode; must runners do this.)
