Create a route around your local area using http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/.
When you first set out beginning running, let yourself run for 30 seconds or until you need a stop, which ever comes first, if you are fitter then of course, go on until you ‘need’ to stop. Take the next few minutes recovering by walking, and then eventually run again, complete the course using this ‘run/walk’ method. Eventually increase the time you’re running and decrease the stoppages you need. If you’re an extreme beginner, run 3-4 times a week on every rolling day ie. Run Monday, rest Tuesday, Run Wednesday, it’ll give your body time to adapt to the exercise you’re forcing on it and hopefully there will be less aches and pains.
Your cardiovascular fitness will improve enabling you to run longer with lighter breathes, and your leg muscles will become stronger, it would be advantage to take the days you aren’t running and go swimming, or cycling, as this will help build leg muscle, strength, and endurance.
Don’t be disappointed and get into the line of thought that you will never improve, if you stick with it you will. When I first started running I was more overweight than I am now, and I thought I’d never be able to run 5k/3miles, I couldn’t even do 30 seconds when I started, but now I can, without a single stop, and recently my longest run was 5 miles. Will I ever make 26? Who knows, will I try? I reckon I will. ;-)
If you need a more 'set-right' routine then look into investing in the many running books out there. I haven't used one but I know there are a few out there so it could be worthwhile looking if it is going to help.
