How do you run the 400m?

Question:I run the 1600 and the 3200, and at times the 800. I ran the 400 faster than anyone on our team in time trials at the start of the season and no one else has won it yet this season so I am running the 400 for the first time tommorrow. How do you run it, I have a real long stride, so should I stride the entire race, or go hard the first 100 pace the next 200 then kick the last 100, or stride the first 200, and go all out the last 200.

I am also sketchy on blocks, I don't realy do them alot so should i just not use them tommorrow and just use a start similar to that of the 40 runners in the NFL combine or take a chance on blocks.

Answers:

Do you think this is fair?

I'm kinda a lot like you. I ran the 3200 and the 1600 a lot but i am a fast 400 meter guy as well. When I first ran the 400 m my coach told me to run it like this. Take the first 100 out fast to get position...glide (don't slow down but don't speed up) on the next 100m and then push an all out sprint from 200m to go. I works pretty well if you don't have the speed to run the entire thign flat out. Thanks to that strategy I got down to a 53 in high school and am running even better now in college.

Side stich?

Since you are not experienced with blocks don't worry about it tomorrow. The 400 is a sprint. You start off fast, run the first 40 to 60 meters until you are at almost top speed. When you come off the turn relax but maintain your stride and turn over rate. You are not going as hard as you can because no one can sprint for 400 meters, but you are going very fast. It is not a stride. When you enter the second curve run a little harder because you need to put out more effort to maintain the speed on the curve. When you come off the curve you are running as fast as you can for this part of the race so do not try to run faster. Relax, keep your arms moving and your stride long. Run in a straight line, look beyond the finish to the end of the track. Focus on something at the end of the track and keep your stride going. If you try to run faster you will tense up and slow down. You can not stride and then go all out, you can not go hard for 100, then pace then kick. You must run fast and relaxed the entire race. It takes a long time to learn how this feels and what your pace is. If you do not attack and be aggressive from the start you can not run a fast race.

Ok in track i run the 1 mile and 2 mile.?

start off pretty fast and end really really fast...

the first times i do a race i try and stay with the first person and then sprint on the last 1 or 2 hundred

What is The Running Tactic for a Fast 4.5km run ... For example Run slow at first then .. start to boost ..!!?

Stay with the pack unless they are going to slow. Use your long stride at the end so you can out kick them.

Convincing my parents to let me run track?

I was always told to run the 400 this way...because it's almost impossible to run the whole thing all out!...

the first 100m come out strong, you want a good start
the second 100m do a fast stride
then once you hit the 200 mark you gotta go all out!!! Since you usually run longer distances you should be able to do this, you have endurance.

as for the blocks...it's up to you. if you don't feel comfortable in them, then maybe it's best if you don't use them. If you don't know what you're doing with the blocks or haven't had a lot of practice they can totally screw up your start. Do whatever you feel comfortable doing.

oh, and good luck!! I hope you win.

Eating habits for athlete, HELP?

Don't use blocks if you aren't used to them, they aren't really neccessary in the 400. All I can tell you is run fast and keep your legs moving quickly and try to keep a steady pace and then finish strong. I you have some fast competition then just run with them then beat them to the finish.

How does running on the balls of my feet help?

Start off really fast, just not quite all out. Do this for the whole first 100. Not only will this help your time, but it will intimidate the other runners. Then on the backstretch, lengthen your stride to as long as you can without really slowing yourself down, so you'll be going almost as fast, but working less hard because of longer strides. The second 100 is really just "chill time." When you get stronger, you should shorten your chill time more and more, and really push the envelope until your "chill time" is just a few seconds. The third 100, especially on the inside lanes, is where the race is won. Pick up your speed a little, and try to get in position to win the race, and when you get to the point where you feel like you can sprint the rest of the way, just go all out! Some people wait until the last 100. I go for the whole last 150. It depends on your confidence and strength. In 2002 I was the number 5 400 runner in the country. I told my sister to do this and she dropped her time three seconds on her first time. Do not try to run the second half faster than the first. It will never work, because you will be too tired, but you do have a distance-running background, which I don't, so maybe it's different for you. That NFL combine thingy will be fine if it's more comfortable for you. Blocks aren't as important in the 400 as they are in the 100 and 200.

What do you think the roughest race is?

im an 8th grader so i dont know how this helps you but i won our district 800 with 59 seconds sooo this is how i run it...

peopel say i run it weird because what i do is i run hard almost a sprint the first 200-210 meters... then i use the last turn and i stride out as far as i can to get ready to sprint the last 110 meters(there a yellow line)

thats just what i do and who knows maybe itll work for you
