How do I start a run in my hometown?
I want to start a race in my hometown. I have quite a few people that I are willing to compete, and I only want to put together a 5k run/walk. I do not know who I would need to contact to be able to shut off a street or two, and other things of that sort. Does anyone know how to produce a race from the ground up?

The city streets dept. is normally where you go to permit a street. They will tell you what they want to do this. It will be better for you if you find a club (Lions, Ambucs, Rotary) to help. They are usually looking for some kind of fund raisers for their charities and they will provide the people to staff your race. Plus people will generally pay more if the money is going to a good cause. You can sell ads on t-shirts and have those as part of the entry fee. Plus different companies will donate goods, like drinks, power bars, yogurt, coupons for food. Plus they will also give prizes for places. If you are the race director you need to get a staff so you can delegate you can not possible do everything by yourself. Pick a good date without other races if possible. Is there some kind of fair or outdoor activity so your race can be a part of the festivity. They will be your major sponsor so people will hang around after the race. There may be a local source for awards, but there are major ones that will ship the medals or trophies to you. You need drinks and snacks (fruit, etc) for the finish while people are waiting for the results. You can get bib numbers so as to track the finishers and keep the results correct. Submit your proposal in full, documenting the route, time of day, day of week and how many contestants will participate. If this is a fund raising event it will be a pushover. If you are trying to make money for a purpose, you need an ally in the supportive role.
