Cramps...help!?

Ok, so i'm pretty good at running, and i really enjoy it, but i cant go for a long time because for some reason i get cramps a lot faster/worse than other people. I can go fast, and i LOVE the burning feeling in my legs, but once i get a cramp under my ribs or in my shoulders, i cant go any farther. I've always thought track would be fun, but i cant build up my endurance/strength in running if i cant get past these cramps. I try to drink a lot of water because that's supposed to lubricate your joints and all, but they still happen. What can i do to make them go away?

I'm looking for ideas for coaching track and field. I'd like it to be enjoyable, but still...?

"Cramps" under the ribs, associated with running, are not the same types of cramps that you might get in your legs. This is usually a problem associated with breathing and the diaphragm. If you have heard "breathe in through you nose and out through your mouth," this is what it pertains to. Scientifically (at least this is how it was explained to me), our lungs expand differently when we inhale through our nose vs. our mouths. This puts added stress on the diaphragm, which is a muscle, causing it to tire.
I would agree with others as well, that you should gradually work up to a desired activity level... and practice breathing correctly.

Joining Track and field?

happens to me too. I have really long legs, and am a fast runner for short distances, but always get tired cuz of those stupid cramps... I'd take a swig of water and rest a little bit before you run any further, don't push yourself to hard, you could end up hurting yourself..

Alright this is a stupid question, but...?

Make sure you are stretching and try to build up endurace slowly, by running slower. Try to walk/stretch the cramps off, and don't drink water before running, that makes you feel sick :S

What should i do to get in shape to run??

Eat a lot of bananas. The potassium helps your muscles to get more oxygen. Cramps are caused by poor oxygen supply, not poorly lubricated joints.

Which is better... InStep Safari or Schwinn Safari double jogging stroller? I need to buy one asap. THANKS?

dont suggest u drink alot of water... if u do make sure its two hours before workout.. if you get a cramp raise ur arms in the air .. this is meant to help... dont eat before ur run . give urself an hour to digest.. thats all i can really tell you.. good luck

Has any one run disney marathon (2007)?

it didn't sound like you mentioned any stretching before your runs. it is very important to stretch before you do any sporting activity it gives your muscles and brain a signal that allows intense activity without cramping or other injuries. You might also look into what you are doing before you run, if you are eating right before you run, you have to remember that your body is also busy digesting your food. you really need to do a minimum of 20 mins of stretching before your running activities...

Best Nike Running shoes?

OMG I get those too! Start running for two minutes then walking for a bit. Then after a few minutes try running again for a few more minutes...until you can take it. Do some speed walking in between to keep your heart rate up. If you practice running daily, increasing a minute or two each day, your body will get into the swing of running and you will feel the cramps less. I still get the cramps in my ribs every now and then though.

What are good exercises to improve your sprint quickness?

Well first do u drink soda's or eat wrong ? And second try eating some banana's or pickles before you run. If all fails try taking some Potassium pills

I had 2 races today and I am really dizzy right now?

The classic runner's "stitch" is a pain in the diaphragm and if you take you fingers and make the Boy Scout sign and jam them under the rib cage you can get some relief.
What I was told to do also was back off a little on the pace until it subsides and then goose it back up again.
If you are hydrating on pure water it will pass through the stomach wall in 15 minutes. If you mix it with anything it will have to be digested as any food would and take longer.

What kind of shoe insert should I buy so that my feet won't hurt when I am running?

Hey,
First of all warm up. Start with a nice slow jog for 5 minutes then increase intensity. Hold off on the water, the less is in your system, the less can bounce around. If you do start to feel the cramps coming on, run with your hands wrapped around your head for a minute or two until they disappear. Arms up and your hands connecting behind your head.

No problem!

Are you doing bloomsday?

Cramps are usually caused by a lack of oxygen or water. Try to take deep breaths before the run and during (if possible). Also make sure that you've had enough water (before, during & after). Check out the link below for more guidance. Best of luck!

How can I get less tired while running?

Dont drink a lot of water right before you run.. that will give you cramps. The way you breathe, and the way your arms move also can give you cramps. Breathe in your nose and our your mouth slowly, and deeply, and when you run, DO NOT have your arms cross your body. That should help. :)

Running Slump?

You shouldnt eat within 2 hours of running, if you do it should be something lite, and only drink a lot of water throughout the day and not within 2 hours of running, again a little wont hurt. If you aren't racing and you get a cramp put both hands on the back of your head and point your elbows to the sky. if you keep running it will go away and when it does it will feel good. Once you are in really good shape cramps are more uncommon
