Cross Country question? it there's any coaches, runners or anyone with experience, please answer, thank you!
i'm going to join cross country this upcoming school year, conditioning starts during summer. i was wondering whether practicing with music is a good idea. i was thinking if i get into a habit of running with music, will it be harder to run the actual race without music. or is running with music going to make practice easier, so when the race is up, i'll be in the best condition ever. i've ran track and field, but since it was shorter distances and focused on speed work drills--music wasn't necessary. my coach didn't let us anyways, we had no choice.

Why do all track and field running events race counter clockwise?
I would not recommend listening to music all the time, but on those long distance days or those lazy days, it could keep you more focused. You should not listen to music when its an offical team practice b/c one, it makes you stand out and not a part of the team, two if you can listen to music that most likely means that you are not running as hard as you can, and lastly its too much of a distraction especially if your running on the roads or trails.I have run two marathons and done just a little cross country.
I have used music on days when I did not necessarily feel as motivated to train.
However, overall, I think it is a good idea to get used to whatever you will ultimately be required to do by the coach.
How do i get my speed up in running?
Start out training with no music so you can get used to it. Try thinking about really deep thoughts and life (or you can sing a song in your head if you so choose). Once you have ran more miles than you can count. Then you can start practicing with listening to real music so you don't bore yourself to death while running. But, every once in a while, try running without music. What are spikes recommended for?
if you enjoy running then u wont have music on .. also i find it to be distracting i focus better on my runs without it.. its also dangerous because u cant hear anything around you ... this can be dangerous cause if u cant hear anything around you then you dont know whats going around you... dont listen with muic its distracting and disables your ability to be aware of the things around youDo you think it would be possible for me to get my mile run down to 5 minutes by fall?
Most cross country coaches don't allow music, but if yours does, use it. The music helps to take your mind off the monotony of running. It won't hinder you during a race, as you will be so focused and pumped up on adrenaline that you'll be all set to go.Whats a good workout for the 400 m dash?
It's really a comfort call on your part. Some people use music when they run recreationally or slow runs not used for training purposes. I don't use music when I run and haven't for the last 7 years of running XC or track. I would suggest running without them to begin with that way you are comfortable without them and don't become attached to the feeling of having them on. If you did get attached to them you may not run as well in a race later on and your times would suffer. Like I said it is really a judgement call on your part. Every runner has a different view on how they train, some like to be social and others like to get lost in their training runs as part of their own relaxation time.Do whatever you feel suits you best. If you decide that listening to music is something that you really want to do, use it when you are training by yourself this summer, or if you go on any runs where you will mainly be running by yourself. I ran XC and T&F all four years of high school, and music is a huge part of my life, so it was my choice to listen to music.
Another suggestion I have for you is to listen to music on your way to a race or meet (i.e. driving, on the bus, etc.). Listen to something that amps you up; something catchy with a fast beat that will stay in your head while you run the race. I used to do this all of the time and it really helped me keep my pace when I began to feel like I was slowing down during a race. It will help you get into your own 'zone', because chances are, no one else will have that same song in their head. It also helps keep you focused on singing it in your head rather than thinking about the potential pain that you are in.!!
Of course, you probably won't be able to listen to music during team practices, because (contrary to popular belief) cross country is a team sport. Use this time to bond with your fellow teammates and chat about what's on your mind.
Hopefully this helps you out. Remember, listen to songs before you race! It really helps!! :)
What is a 'good' time to aim for a 5k?

What is the easiest way to start running for exercise?
Music can be fun during long training runs, but most coaches (myself included) don't allow music-players at practice. During practice, focus on your form and catching the runner in front of you...it's enough to keep you occupied. Check out some of the XC tips below...have a great season!!- Mike
How much will my time improve if I stop eating fried foods?
I wouldn't use music to run and train. I feel like it is a waste of time and that you are better off without it!More Questions & Answers...
