Distance cross country and hills, the most important need is stamina our distance runners in Cambridge ran the fells events and beat them so providing you have variation in your training you can train for the fells on flattish ground, join your local athletic club go in with the distance guys and off you go but I think you have missed to many sessions to be any good this season unless you can train 5/6 days a week

The best way to train is out doors , as this is cross country , you need to get used to running on slippery surfaces, fields , muddy tracks and the like, and get used to cold wet feet .
I would recommend getting smart wool socks. I just ran the grim challenge in December where most of the course was deep puddles and they kept my feet surprisingly warm.
Also get yourself a good pair of fell running shoes or off road shoes . Normal road trainers do not have enough grip.
