How can I eliminate pains from drinking water during a run?
I run pretty hard for 5 miles a day, but if I drink at all during that period I get horrible side cramps. Also, if I drink anything more than an hour before a run, I'll cramp up. What is causing this?

Try hydrating the entire day. Every time you pass a water fountain, take a drink. Carry a water bottle with you. If you hydrate throughout the day, you won't even need to drink during your run. Just make sure you stop drinking about an hour to and hour and a half before your run. If you run in the morning, you need to hydrate in the afternoon, and then only have a little bit of water before you run. Make sure you get enough to drink after your run. If this doesn't work (which it should), take a Maalox Max about 45 minutes before you run (if you can). Maalox contains magnesium which helps prevent cramps. Maybe you are drinking too much at one time. Try taking little sips at a time. the cramps may not even be from water. I also get cramps, and usually it's because I start off too quickly. Some people need to run slowly for about a mile until they are warmed up to run at their normal pace. People also get side cramps because their posture is incorrect. What is a really good time for the 110m hurdles in high school?

Maybe if you just drink little sips it might help. I personally have never run 5 miles (it is SO great that you are) but I have gotten side cramps. Also maybe if you take a pain killer before you run, it might get rid of the cramping. I hope the side aches end soon! Good Luck!Is running affecting my workout?

My experience is stop drinking 90 minutes before the run. If you feel your mouth/throat is dry before the run, take light sips enough to wet it.Imagine your stomach like a tank. When there is water inside and the tank is being shaken violently caused by your running motion, what will happen inside? The water, together with the gastric acid, within will splash all over the stomach walls causing stitches. This is my personal analysis as I was a competitive 8-km runner for 20 years and I had not suffered stitches. My team members who followed my instruction did not suffer stitches. My instruction was last food intake is 3 hours before whereas last water intake is 1.5 hours.
I used to tell my team mates to condition their bodies and run like camels. Try follow my method. Email me when your stitches / cramps problem is resolved.
