Scraped Leg running question?


On Wednesday while running I tripped on a curb and scraped by upper shin pretty badly. It bled and is tender now. I am running a 1/2 marathon on Saturday and am wondering if I need to be concerned. When I am still I can't feel it, but when I run I can feel it when I come down on that leg, but it is not bad. I have not run since the accident, but am wondering if it will be a problem when I run for a long time.

I think you will be fine, you're in the taper period anyway now, so rest up, put some neosporin on the shin and you'll be fine. If it does act up though, causing you to run with a limp, be smart and stop, do not run long distances on an injury like I did and end up really hurt for months.

Triple Jump?

If all you did was scrape it then there is nothing to worry about. When you move, you are stretching the skin which pulls apart the scab that is trying to form in order to heal the skin. Put an antiseptic cream on today and replace it tomorrow. If you have a spray antiseptic, take it with you during the race for a quick touch up if it gets too sore. I suspect that you will not need it by then but good luck in the run.

Mile time?

It's bound to be sore for at least a week. Feeling it pulsing or aching some when you run is perfectly normal. That's okay so long as there is no unusual pain suggesting more than scrapes and bruising (such as sharp shooting pains).

As it scabs, you may run the risk of opening it up during the run. I would apply an antibiotic salve, wrap a few turns in medical gauze, and then apply a self-sticking elastic sports wrap before the race. In fact, you should try it days before the race, and run for perhaps a mile. This will help you figure out how to make it feel comfortable, and less of a distraction.

You'll be just fine. If anything, you can feel ever better about running a half while injured. You warrior!
